"I have played in many venues across the UK and Europe, some of which are still with us and some, sadly are not. One of those we no longer have the pleasure of playing was an evening of music organised by Adam Bohman, a true stalwart of the free improvisation music scene, in a small room above a pub in Catford, South London. I was booked to play a duo with Kay Grant, an old friend and colleague who has the most wonderful voice. Just prior to performing, on the 'bandstand', fingers, lungs and brains at the ready, and after the introductions had been made, I looked up to see an Empty Birdcage hanging from the ceiling. I looked towards the audience and remarked how much of a pleasure it was to be playing under an Empty Birdcage. I have long admired the avian community and to see cages free of birds pleases mE, For both the bird and the cage. So, the name remained in my head awaiting further use, the time of which seems to have crept upon me!"
